Début Novel set in
Tidewater area
Suffolk, Virginia… A mermaid
trapped in the hollow shell of the
statues in Norfolk because of her
dominant ways, stealing her sister’
s first kill. A tale of revenge that is
older than time awaits the reader
in ENCHANTED a debut fantasy
novel written by Suffolk native,
Nancy O’Berry for Midnight
Showcase e publication.
A native of the Tidewater area,
Mrs. O’Berry grew up next to the
Indian River in Virginia Beach and
moved to Suffolk when her love
for horses came into conflict with
her families’ half acre home off
Ballylynn Road.
“Growing up on the water and
listening to my Grandfather, who
was captain of the Seaboard in
the Norfolk area, gave me a
delicious feel for sea tales,” she
explains. “So it was only natural
that when our Chesapeake
Romance Writers threw out the
idea of doing Mermaid tales I
would write one.” What she did
not have at first was the courage
to show it to anyone else in the
writer’s group.
“Like all new writers, you think
your work is not good enough.
Thank heavens I had a good
mentor who threatened to put her
foot where it didn’t belong,” she
states. “I took her advice and
wrote about things I knew,
remembered, and heard at family
reunions. It was a blast putting a
romantic spin on a not so typical
story. Perhaps the hardest thing
was having faith in myself to pull it
off.” When asked who would be
interested in her tale, she
responded, “Enchanted is a love
story, first and foremost. I think all
people are romantics at heart and
want to see girl meet guy and fall
in love. The fact that she must do
it before the summer solstice puts
a bit of pressure on Serena, King
Neptune’s daughter if she is to
escape her fate of being
imprisoned in one of those
delightful statues along the
waterfront.”
Mrs. O’Berry is a member of
Romance Writers of America and
President of Chesapeake
Romance Writers based at the
Russell Memorial Library in
Chesapeake.
